Bruce is a history buff he deftly compares and contrasts administrations over the decades. Last week, I had the opportunity to interview Bruce Mehlman, founder of the bipartisan lobbying firm Mehlman Castagnetti Rosen & Thomas, and probably as famous for his quarterly slide decks of the pulse of Washington as he is for his access and knowledge of how Washington works. If only we knew the combination, we could be back in that moment. Maybe memories are solidly tangible, like old photographs in a drawer somewhere.

We aren’t physically back in time, but part of us is, and at that moment we wonder if time is linear after all. Tony Newman and Douglas Phillips of the late 1960s television show, Time Tunnel, who tumbled out of that cornucopia-shaped black and white striped tunnel during the credits. Whoosh, and there we are, back in time like the characters Drs. What triggers that feeling is often the gentlest prodding to our senses - a song popular during our first love the pungent smell of a favorite childhood meal instantly transporting us back to our grandmother’s kitchen sunlight reflecting the way it did at an important moment in time hearing or even using a favorite expression of a lost loved one.

After a certain age, we find ourselves just as naturally looking backwards with frequency, often accompanied by the feeling of “diamonds and rust,” both joy and melancholy. The difference, it would seem, between youth and aging is that in youth we look forward and naturally see a boundless horizon and infinite deposits of time. After 60 years of performing, Baez announced her retirement in 2019. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Joan Chandos Baez, who was born in Staten Island, N.Y., in 1941, is best remembered for her folk music performances of the 1960s, which included 14 songs at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. When introducing “Diamonds & Rust” at live performances, Baez describes Dylan as “by far, the most talented and crazy person I’ve ever worked with.” It was also the title song of Baez’s gold-selling album, which was released in 1975. Often regarded as one of her best compositions, “Diamonds and Rust” topped out at #5 on the Billboard U.S. With nothing left to give him, she sings, “It’s all come back too clearly / Yes I loved you dearly / And if you’re offering me diamonds and rust / I’ve already paid.” When Dylan placed the surprise call to Baez in 1974, she sensed his life was “heading straight for a fall.” Music historians believe this was a time when Dylan’s marriage was on the rocks and he was looking to rekindle his relationship with Baez.īut, as we see in the last line of the song, Dylan’s outreach is strongly rebuked. Sadly, the relationship wasn’t reciprocal and the couple parted ways.

She also explains how he seemed “temporarily lost at sea” and how she did her best to keep him unharmed. She sweetly recalls how his eyes were bluer than robin’s eggs. She sings, “Ten years ago / I bought you some cufflinks / You brought me something / We both know what memories can bring / They bring diamonds and rust.”īaez goes on to tell the story of the “unwashed phenomenon” and “original vagabond” who strayed into her arms.
